WHAT HAPPENS DURING A THERAPY SESSION?
The relationship with your therapist is key. Maybe you read all the self-help books. You do all the self-care. You use all the meditation apps. You write all the affirmations. But nothing works. That's where I come in. To help you dig deep into your thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. To unpack your pains, and rewrite your story. To help you sort out the mud puddles keeping you stuck and feel more like you. A good fit in therapy is feeling connected to, trusting of, and safe in your vulnerability with a therapist. IS EVERYTHING I TALK ABOUT CONFIDENTIAL?
Our first few sessions will focus on getting to know you. We will work to gain an understanding of the concerns, hopes, and the goals that bring you to therapy. We will then tailor therapy to your specific needs and create a plan to achieve the outcomes you want. You may be asked to reflect, to share your thoughts, to express your emotions, to consider alternatives, and to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. We know that sometimes trying something new like therapy can feel vulnerable and scary. You will be entirely supported throughout your entire counseling journey.
HOW LONG DOES THERAPY TAKE?
This is a hard one to answer because each person’s circumstances are inherently unique. Therapy typically begins with regular visits as we build momentum. During your first session, we will discuss the frequency and timing that best fits your needs. The simplest answer is that therapy "ends" when you feel you have gotten to the place that you came to therapy for. But it's ultimately up to you. Some come to therapy with a specific goal in mind and end once that goal has been met. Others find therapy to be so helpful that they make it an integral part of their self-care routine even after their initial goal has been met and new ones have been established. Most commonly, we will explore that decision together with the understanding that you are welcome to come back at any time.
WHAT IF I HAVE TO CANCEL AN APPOINTMENT?
Although issues such as family and work emergencies, childcare issues, or illness may arise that make it challenging to keep your appointment, I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy. Since the appointment time has been set aside just for you, there will be a charge for any session canceled within 24 hours.
HOW DOES ONLINE THERAPY WORK?
Online therapy is no different from in-person therapy aside from not sharing physical space together. Think of online therapy as having sessions with a therapist through Facetime or Skype. But therapists use a HIPAA-complaint software that is secure, encrypted and follows regulations for health information and patient privacy laws. Research shows online therapy is just as effective as office sessions. However, not everyone is a good fit for online sessions so it's best to have a phone consultation so we can decide together what modality fits you best.
